Heritage & Craft

Spiral. Scroll. Wax. Indigo. Ancient Forms.

The large spiral medallions and swirling cloud scroll forms on this top draw from some of the oldest decorative motifs in Asian textile history — the spiral representing continuity, the cloud scroll representing movement and fortune. Here they are rendered in cerulean blue wax-resist on deep indigo cotton.

The characteristic crackle lines visible across the cerulean areas — where cooled wax fractured during dye immersion — are the authentic signature of hand-drawn batik. No two metres crack the same way.

The Making

Wax, Dye, Crack, Reveal

Two wax batik techniques used across this set — free-hand tjanting drawing for the spiral top, and a combination of guided wax strips and blocks for the vertical stripe bottom.

01
Wax Drawing — Top

Hot wax is applied onto dark indigo cotton using a tjanting tool — tracing every spiral coil, cloud scroll curl and dot accent by hand before dye immersion.

02
Cerulean Dye Bath

The waxed dark indigo fabric is submerged in bright cerulean blue dye — the wax resists in the spiral and scroll areas, creating the lighter blue pattern against the darker indigo ground.

03
Stripe Batik — Bottom

Vertical wax strips are applied in parallel columns on the bottom fabric — alternate columns left open for the blob and butterfly motifs — creating the striped composition before cerulean dye immersion.

04
Wax Removal & Setting

All three pieces are boiled to remove wax, revealing the full cerulean pattern on dark indigo ground — then heat-set to permanently bond both tones into the cotton fibres.

Wear It Your Way

One Palette. Three Patterns. Total Harmony.

Dark indigo and cerulean blue are the same colour family at different depths — making this a monochromatic set that feels rich rather than flat. The dense spiral top and the rhythmic stripe bottom contrast in pattern scale while agreeing completely in tone.

The dupatta holds all three patterns — stripes, spirals and sunbursts — in one coordinated drape that completes every silhouette. Unstitched — cut to your exact fit.

The Dupatta

Stripes. Sunbursts. Spirals. All in One Drape.

The upper body carries the same vertical stripe and scattered blob motifs as the bottom fabric — framed by large sunburst/dandelion circular medallions that appear only on the dupatta. Then the lower border section carries the same dense spiral and cloud scroll batik as the kurta top — bringing the entire set together in one 240 cm statement drape.

Wash & Care

Keep the Indigo Deep. Keep the Blue Bright.

  • Hand wash separately in cold water with mild detergent.
  • Do not soak or scrub printed areas. No bleach or harsh chemicals.
  • Dry in shade — sunlight fades both indigo and cerulean tones.
  • Iron on low heat from reverse side only. Do not wring harshly.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? We're here to help.

Does khadi get softer with every wash?

Usually, it does. After each wash, the fibers tend to relax and the fabric gets looser, thus giving a softer and more comfortable feeling.

Is the Sky Blue Traditional Cotton Khadi fabric truly handspun and handwoven?

Yes. The Sky Blue Traditional Cotton Khadi fabric is handspun and handwoven by artisans who are skilled and who use traditional looms, thus each piece has a unique texture.

Is this khadi fabric breathable and comfortable for summer wear?

Yes. Khadi is a breathable fabric and is lightweight as well, so it allows the air to pass and keeps the skin cool. It is very comfortable for summer wear.

Will the sky blue colour fade after a few washes?

No. The sky blue colour stays bright if you care for it properly. Use cold water for washing with a mild soap and dry in the shade to avoid fading of the colour.

What makes Khadi special?

Each Khadi Sadan product is crafted from authentic KVIC-certified hand-spun and hand-woven fabric, made by skilled rural artisans using natural fibers and dyes. Every piece supports sustainable livelihoods and carries forward India’s timeless textile heritage since 1982.

How should I care for my Khadi garment?

We recommend gentle hand wash or mild machine wash in cold water using eco-friendly detergent. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals. Dry in shade to preserve natural texture and color. With every wash, Khadi becomes softer and more comfortable aging beautifully with time.
