You may return most new, unopened items within 14 days of delivery for a full refund. We'll also pay the return shipping costs if the return is a result of our error (you received an incorrect or defective item, etc.).

This set is an exercise in tonal discipline — every pattern made from the same grey, revealed only through the depth difference between wax-resist areas and dye-absorbed ground. The leaf sprig buti and horizontal dash marks on the top are preserved in lighter grey where wax protected the cotton during dye immersion.

Tone-on-tone batik is one of the most refined forms of the craft — pattern visible only through shadow and depth, not colour contrast.

The Making

Wax, Dye, Reveal, Repeat

Grey tone-on-tone batik requires the most precise ink depth control — the wax-resist areas must emerge just light enough to read as pattern against the dyed ground.

Wax Application — Top

Hot wax is drawn onto grey cotton tracing each leaf sprig buti and the horizontal dash-dot resist lines using a tjanting tool and small wax blocks.

Deeper Grey Dye Bath

The waxed fabric is submerged in a deeper grey dye — the waxed leaf and dash areas resist, emerging lighter against the deeper grey dyed ground.

Vertical Stripe Wax — Bottom

For the bottom, wax is applied in vertical streaming oval and dot column patterns — the resist creates lighter elongated marks arranged like falling rain on grey.

Wax Removal & Setting

All pieces boiled to remove wax, revealing the full tone-on-tone pattern — then heat-set to permanently fix both grey tones into the cotton fibres.
