The paisley — known in South Asia as kairi or mango motif — is one of the oldest and most beloved patterns in Indian textile history. This set places it large, bold and unashamed on vivid rani pink cotton, each oversized form carved into a single wooden block and stamped in soft baby pink by hand.

The wavy vertical stripe texture of the ground is itself a resist-print layer — two layers of craft in one fabric, visible only when you look closely.

The Making

Carve, Load, Press, Repeat

Three separate blocks — one for the paisley top, one for the geometric square bottom, one for the dupatta elements — each requiring its own carved wood, its own ink tray and its own patient hand.

Block Carving

The large oversized paisley form is hand-carved into a teak wood block — the gentle curve of the kairi tail and the rounded body cut in a single piece for a clean, bold impression.

Ground Preparation — Top

The rani pink cotton ground is first printed with a fine wavy stripe resist pattern — creating the subtle tone-on-tone vertical texture visible beneath the paisley.

Paisley Stamping

Soft baby pink ink is loaded onto the oversized paisley block and stamped across the rani pink ground in a deliberate loose grid — each impression placed by eye, each kairi unique.

Geometric Block — Bottom

A separate square-within-square block with central dot is stamped in soft pink on the rani pink bottom — column by column, row by row, with dotted divider lines stamped between each column.
