You may return most new, unopened items within 14 days of delivery for a full refund. We'll also pay the return shipping costs if the return is a result of our error (you received an incorrect or defective item, etc.).

This set is a study in reversal — the same magenta and amber applied in opposite roles across the top and bottom. The sunburst medallions, diamond lattice and oval dots on the top are amber wax-resist on magenta. The crescent moons, triangles and chevrons on the bottom are magenta on amber.

Both use the same ancient wax-resist process — hot wax drawn or blocked onto fabric before dye immersion, creating patterns the dye cannot penetrate. The characteristic crackle lines where wax has fractured are the mark of authentic batik.

The Making

Wax, Dye, Crack, Reveal

Authentic wax batik is one of the most labour-intensive textile crafts — every pattern applied by hand with hot wax before the fabric meets the dye bath.

Wax Application

Hot wax is applied onto the cotton fabric using a tjanting tool or carved wax block — tracing each sunburst, diamond and geometric motif by hand in molten wax.

Dye Immersion

The waxed fabric is submerged in dye — magenta for the top, amber for the bottom. The waxed areas resist the dye, preserving the amber or magenta ground beneath.

Crackle & Character

As the wax cools and the fabric moves, fine cracks form — dye seeps through these fractures creating the signature crackle lines that are the hallmark of authentic batik.

Wax Removal & Fixing

Fabric is boiled to remove all wax, then heat-set — revealing the full pattern and permanently bonding both colours into the cotton fibres.
